Dirties Day of the Year Beach Cleanup, July 5th Heceta Beach Park

FLORENCE, OR – Fireworks are an integral part of the Fourth of July. Oregon state laws allow certain
fireworks to be bought and used but NO fireworks are allowed on county, state or federal lands such as parks,
wilderness areas, forests or beaches. For the past four years, members of the City of Florence Environmental
Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) have been cleaning up the Heceta Beach County Park beaches
on July 5th. The amount of firework debris (sometimes still burning) is astonishing and has an enormous
impact on the wildlife and ecosystem along the shoreline and in the ocean.

This year on Sunday July 5th, EMAC, in collaboration with County Transfer and Recycling (CTR), Lane County
Parks and Driftwood Shores, will be hosting a SOLVE Dirtiest Day of the Year Clean Up Event at Heceta
Beach Park. The event starts at 9 am and all the supplies will be provided. Please register at SOLVE –
https://bit.ly/48GZksy. CTR will also be providing special designated garbage carts located at both entrances
to the park so people will be reminded to remove their garbage from the beach.

Both Oregon State Parks and the City of Florence encourage all residents and visitors to attend the managed
Florence Chamber of Commerce Fireworks display instead of bringing fireworks to the beach. The event
starts at 10 pm at the Port of Siuslaw in downtown Florence. More details can be found at
https://florencechamber.com/events/annual-events-festivals/july-4th/

Join EMAC, CTR and Lane County Parks for a Happy July 5th Beach Cleanup on the Dirtiest Day of the Year.
Thanks to Driftwood Shores and Surfside Grill for providing volunteer appreciation coupons after the event.
