Free compost workshop at the Florence Food Share Garden, 2190 Spruce St., in Florence, on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. – noon.

For beginning to experienced composters, this hands-on workshops will cover the basics of how composting works, which materials to use, and the different methods and types of compost systems available. Workshops are led by knowledgeable backyard composting information specialists.

Soil samples will also be accepted at the workshop for a $2 fee per sample. Bring 1 cup of dry soil for each sample (limit of 3 samples, please). A pH test will tell you how acidic or basic your soil is. Most plants prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils, but some plants grow best in more acidic soils (blueberries, rhododendrons, azaleas, etc.). Soil nutrients are also affected by the soil pH.
